On Wednesday the 15th of November, Frances Doherty came into our school to discuss the topic, "Homelessness". Frances is from the Peter Mc Verry Trust Charity. At the start of his speech he explained to us about how the charity was founded. He told us about the organisation and what it does to try and stop homelessness. Ireland has one of the biggest homeless issues across the globe. Frances mentioned that Drugs and Alcohol cause homelessness the most. The organisation have a detox programme which help guide people to try and rehabilitate them. Peter Mc Verry also provide emergency shelters for those in need. Frances told us about the empty home scheme the organisation are trying to introduce. This scheme is to re-home the homeless people in the empty homes around Ireland. Ireland has many empty homes and this scheme could potentially stop homelessness. The talk was very beneficial to our YSI group as it gave the students and I many more innovative ideas in which to help the homeless. The talk also made our group more aware of how serious the crises is in Ireland Today.
