On Friday, the 24th of November 2017, I went to the I.A.D.T Open Day (The Institute of art, design and technology) in Dun Laoghaire, Co.Dublin. I went to the college by car with my dad and I arrived at the campus at around 9:30 AM. I had my day planned out before I arrived to the college (I knew what talks I was going to and at what time).
The first talk I went to was the animation talk. It started at 10:30 AM and it was the talk I was most interested in. I’ll be doing work experience in ‘Brown Bag Films’ which is an animation company (between the 11th and 15th of December). The tutor for animation in I.A.D.T is the founder of ‘Brown Bag Films’. His name was Keith. Animation is all about bringing drawings to life. The first year students learn the basics of animation by drying a simple wave and ball. Each year advances on and on the final year they make their own short animated film. You can specialise in storyboards, actually animating the drawing or designing the characters that are included in the film.
My second talk was the visual communication and design talk. This talk wasn’t as interesting as the animation talk but it was still good. Viscom is all about designing text, bookcovers and subtitles. It’s all about originality and being creative.
My third talk was at 12 PM which was 3D design and modelmaking. This talk was about making 3D models for movie sets and much more. When I arrived to the studio there were a series of students working on their projects, for example, modelling head/faces out of clay. They also do 3D modelling on computers and print out their projects on the 3D printers.
My fourth and final talk was at 1:30 PM which was creative computing. This talk was about coding and numbers. The tutor taught me the basics of coding. One of the students who is in their fourth year of college there is a past pupil from St.Gerards! After my final talk I got two buses and a dart home. In conclusion I really enjoyed the I.A.D.T Open day because it was very beneficial to me as I am really interested in art and technology.
